We just can't get enough of the wildness, the birds, the dolphin, the seabreezes, the shells, the sand, the sea oats, the dunes, the salt air, the starlit nights, hot tubs, shooting stars, starfish, Dirty Dicks crabs and the beach house in OBX....
For the past 3 weekends we have made the trek from Durham to Nags Head in 3 hours and 15 minutes each way. Since there is no traffic, the driving time on 540 and 64 is always the same. There are more cars off the road than on the road. ( a peculiarity in this part of the country!) Straight and empty highways are flanked by cotton fields, pine forests and scattered dilapidations.
Once you get closer to the marshlands and Inner Banks, the landscape is dotted with cyprus groves and signs warning of bear and wolves. Only the tiny towns of Columbia and Creswell stand out and require a wariness of state police giving out speeding tickets in a fundraising attempt.
One weekend we brought Pam with us.... we had our usual good times, eating, walking, biking, roller blading and beachcombing. You have to appreciate Myron trying to get a pix of Pam biking and me roller blading while he was riding his bike!!! Not terribly coordinated, at least he didn't fall.
Last weekend we brought my parents, Oma and
Opa to the beach.... They floored us all by walking close to 3 miles ....my Mom with the rolling walker and my Dad with a cane!
They sat on the beach and actually enjoyed the dermabrasion caused by the infamous OBX breezes just before a brief afternoon storm. Oma ate an entire local flounder and Opa feasted on all the Dungeness crab he could eat....
When do we get back ....? Not soon enough...
Love
Anna and Myron
